about

Galway, Ireland’s The Terribles bring their debut mini-album to the U.S. Mixing subtle electronics, carefully crafted atmoshperics with live cello, brass and tape loops, the Terribles create a unique brand of lush soundscape-driven pop., drawing comparisons to The Postal Service, Grandaddy and Lali Puna.

Neassa Doherty’s warm vocals are soothing, almost seductive, but her detached delivery balances out any romance. It’s this icy dichotomy that’s central not only to the lead voice of the Terribles, but to the music itself.

Lauded on Ireland’s national radio and press as “wonderful” and “destined for (subdued) greatness”, London’s Rough Trade also praised this record as “sweet electronica-tinged mellowness”. Off the back of unique stage performances and a commitment to textured sound, live appearances have been notably eclectic.

Opener “Promise:” is a slow-core gem, with floating tapeloops and eerie cello creating a subdued Sparklehorse edge, demonstrating a perfect balance of sweetness and meloncholia. “Those Songs”, with a nod to Neutral Milk Hotel, has a bitter edge as sonically engrossing multiple layers of sound create a lush, dreamy atmosphere.

“Mistake: Do Over” swoons with soft whispered vocals and lyrical guitar lines, conjuring images of Wilco or Thee More Shallows at their experimental best and “Plant This” serves as a final statement of intent. Twisting through a darkened melody of plaintive cello and viola, Neassa whispers, “Plant This, and then I’m done”. Fortunately for the rest of us, The Terrible’s journey has only begun.

Review by Road Records: TERRIBLES, THE MISTAKE DO OVER (March 2006)
"The debut four track ep from this irish based five piece outfit, and its a rather beautiful collection of very very mellow electronic pop sounds, something similar to a cross between postal service and lali puna with its clever use of electronic sounds mingling with live guitars, tape loops, cello and brass, a very refreshing sound."

Review by Lost Music and also featured on Frequency Ireland online fanzine (August 03, 2006)
"Opening song 'Promise' comes on like a cross between mellow Yo La Tengo and American Analog Set. With gorgeous female vocals added to the mix. I'd dare to call the voice alluring and seductive. This is slow paced indie pop that nods to the alt country sound.. - wonderful stuff."

Leagues O'Toole, in reference to Today FM's Pet Sounds, 'Rising Artist of the Week' ("Sleeve Notes", part 13, The Clare People May 06)
"It was a Galway based group called The Terribles that stole the limelight this week. For me The Terribles have come out of the blue with a lush and dreamy pop sound. They have lots of admirers too as people were texting in from all over the country to vote for The Terribles. Their Myspace page explains their debut EP Mistake: Do Over is available to buy in the Rough Trade shops in England, they've received Canadian airplay, yet don't appear to have played a show in Dublin yet. That makes The Terribles all the more appealing. Good luck to The Terribles."

Rough Trade shops website review (April 2006)
"a warm home record which veers from indie rock to sweet electronica-tinged mellowness – like if Sparklehorse got stranded on a desert island with one of the germanic girls from morr music and all there was to do was bask in the sun and gather coconuts all the live long day."
